Magna Carta 800th Anniversary in St Albans
2013 marks the 800th anniversary of a meeting in St Albans that started the journey leading to the sealing of Magna Carta in Runnymede in 1215. At the Museum of St Albans from 1st June you can find out what motivated the barons and clergy to formulate their demands to King John. Over the weekend of 2nd-4th August the city will commemorate the events of 1213 in a number of venues, including the Museum of St Albans, Verulamium Park, the medieval city centre and St Albans Cathedral. Our programme will highlight the events of 1213 and show how Magna Carta is relevant to the present day for audiences of all ages from St Albans and beyond. Don’t miss Manga Carta - a retelling of the Magna Carta themes of injustice and the fight for freedom in the style of Japanese Manga comics, on display at the Museum of St Albans in August.

International Women's Day - Soroptimist International St Albans & District
The local branch of the global women’s organisation, Soroptimist International St Albans & District, held an inspirational “Join Women on the Bridge” event to mark InternationalWomen’s Day on March 10, Mother’s Day.
The crowds gathered on the bridge over the boating lake in Verulamium Park in St Albans in spite of the cold, making a “Stand for Peace and an End to Violence Against Women and Girls”. People wore white as a sign of peace and the bridge was a symbol of people joining together around the world united in a common cause.
The Mayor of St Albans, Councillor Eileen Harris attended. There were short speeches, and the Mayor said how much she admired the work of Soroptimists and organisations like the St Albans & Hertsmere Women’s Refuge.
